Flowers offered to Lord Muruga

Each god in Hindu pantheon has a favorite flower and leaves that is used for Virtual Puja. Lord Muruga, also known as Skanda, Subrahmanya, etc is usually offered white or red Arali. Other favorite flowers that can be offered are rose and Champa flowers (Shenbegam).


Arali is also know as Oleander, Kaner in Hindi and Rakatakarabi in Bengali.

But the point to be noted is that Arali flower and plants are considered to be poisonous and is believed to toxic compounds so they have to be handled very carefully.

Golden champa or yellow champa locally known as chambugam or chempaka is another favorite flower of Lord Muruga.

Arulmigu Subramania Swamy Temple

Location of the temple

Subramania Swamy Temple is located at Tirchendur. Tirchendur is a sacred and prosperous town of victory. It is a town in Tuticorin district of Tamil Nadu.

Divines of the temple

In Tiru murugarruppadai and in other devotional literature it is stated that lord murugan have chosen six spots in Tamil Nadu which are referred by Nakkirar as sanctity place of worship more than an ordinary one. Among the six place of worship Tiruchendur occupies the second place.

Auspicious temple

Every day processions are carried out in the inner sanctum and the uthsava murti is taken to the outer prakaram on the last Friday of every month. Special processions and poojas are performed on the days like karttikai vishakam asterisms and sashti.

Temple Virtual Pooja

Abishegam is performed three times a day for Lord Senthilandavar and every month and on the first of Chitrai and Aippasi months for Shanmukhaon Vishaka Nakshatram. On the last Friday of every tamil months the consorts of Senthil Nayagar is taken round the Giri Prakaram. The poojas inArulmigu Subramaniaswamy Temple and other deities are performed by Namboodris, Mukkannis and Trisutantra Bhahmins. And they also perform some other services in the temple also. Their major functions are to make offerings, kattalais, etc for the lords.

According to Kumara Tantra seven major poojas are performed daily.

1.Viswaroopam at 5.30 a.m.

2.Udhaya Marthandam at 6.00 a.m.

3.(a) Mudhal Kala Sandhi. (b) Siru Kala Sandhi. (C) Peria Kala Sandhi. -Commencing at 8 a.m.

4.Uchikalam at 12.30 p.m.

5.Sayaratchai at 5.00 p.m.

6.Arthajamam at 9.15 p.m.

7.Ekantham at 9.35 p.m.

All the poojas are done for both Lord Siva and Subramanya. But at the month of Margazhi that is from mid December to Mid January the daily poojas begin at 3 AM and end by 8.30 PM.

Tiruchendur Subramaniaswamy Temple Structure

Tiruchendur is a sacred and prosperous town of Lord Muruga. The vasanta Mandapam in the temple has 120 columns with a central porch. Overlooking the sea there stands a Ananda Vilas Mandapam. The mandam has 16 pillars and is build with black granite. In the front adjust to the main temple stands the Shanmukha vilasam mandapam. The pillars of this mandam touches the ceiling through the elaborately carved and majestic pillars.

The main entrance leads to sivili mandapam. This is long corridor which runs tot he secong prahara where we can see row of columns of yalis. On the northern prahara there is a vishnu shrine which is hollowed in the rock itself.

The main god of Arulmigu Subramaniaswamy Temple is Lord Muruga. The lord can be seen in a standing position. In a single line one can see four lithic inscriptions which has been collected at the time of pandya.

A little away from the main shrine there is a cave called valli cave. There are two images in the cave one is for valli and the other is for Dattatreya. Nazhik Kinaru is a remarkable spring that is located at the rolling high sand dune on the beach. The history says that after Lord Senthilandavar planted his lance (the vel) on the ground the spring has sprung. The spring has fresh crystal water and it is know as Nazhik Kinaru. Having a bath in the sea and in this well is considered to be more spiritual.
